23 Killed, 72 Injured As Utkal Express Derails In UP’s Muzaffarnagar


On Saturday, 14 coaches of Puri-Haridwar Express (Utkal Express) ran off the tracks near Khatauli railway station.
According to the railway officials, “Utkal Express” does not have a stoppage in Khatauli, the train was running at a speed around 105Kmph.
According to some sources the driver felt threatened due to some danger, as he applied an emergency brake, which is considered to be the possible reason for derailment.
UP Chief minister said that he has ordered an inquiry into the accident. “Strict action will be taken against any lapse,” the minister tweeted.
A team of the anti-terror squad or ATS of the police was sent to the accident site to conduct a preliminary inquiry. Authorities, however, maintain there has been nothing yet to suggest foul play in the accident.
Two teams were sent from the NDRF headquarters, a dog squad has been sent along with them. It is believed that Dog Squad has been sent due to suspected terror plot.
Resources also reported that some maintenace work was in progress on the tracks, which required trains to maintain a speed between 10 to 15Kmph, but Utkal’s driver ignored this instruction.


Local residents of Khatauli town were the first ones to reach the passengers and pulled out many survivors.
Some bogies also entered the populated area and nearby houses and school.

Rs 3.5 lakh for kin of those killed, Rs 50K for those seriously injured, Rs 25K for those with minor injuries: @sureshpprabhu

The accident hit train services on the busy Northern Railway route. The Railways has announced a compensation of Rs. 3.5 lakh for the family of those killed, Rs. 50,000 for those seriously injured
and Rs. 25,000 for people with minor injuries. The governments of Uttar Pradesh and Odisha also announced compensation for the victims.
Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the families of those killed and injured in the accident.
